Despite the difficulties with Eurozone Sovereign debt, Quarter 4 saw strong gains in the average Managed Fund by 7.5%. The growth was driven by good performance in global stock markets which was further enhanced by an appreciation on non Euro assets due to currency movements. Bonds suffered during the period following a decline in the credit rating of several countries.
Overall 2011 was poor with the average Managed Fund losing 3.5% in value. Canada Life/Setanta was the only fund manager to show a positive return while Merrion Investment Managers were the poorest performer at -5.9%. The 3 and 10 year figures are positive but 5 years figures remain negative as they include the very poor 2008 year.
The table below outlines the annualised performance of a number of asset classes. The figures demonstrate the high volatility in recent times, both for Equity and Bond values.
